  1. Webster, Daniel 1782-1852. US politician and
  2. orator, born in New Hampshire. He sat in the
  3. House of Representatives from 1813 and in the
  4. Senate from 1827, at first as a Federalist
  5. and later as a Whig. He was secretary of
  6. state 1841-43 and 1850-52, and negotiated the
  7. Ashburton Treaty in 1842, which fixed the
  8. Maine-Canada boundary. His celebrated
  9. `seventh of March' speech in the Senate in
  10. 1850 helped secure a compromise on the
  11. slavery issue.
